Party pitfalls and How to avoid them

The big celebration is looming - be it an engagement, wedding reception, baby shower or birthday party. Whatever the occasion you want to make it memorable and ensure your guests have an awesome time. We don’t want to take the shine off your excitement by mentioning the two P words…planning and preparation, but without them you might experience two other P’s…party pitfalls. Let Share Our Joy Events help you to make your party one to remember, for all the right reasons.

Think of others – but don’t forget to please yourself!

Choose a venue that you feel relaxed in, if you’re not keen on large, loud gatherings don’t be swayed to organize a celebration in a nightclub or a hotel ballroom (even if your friends all think it’s a fab idea). You don’t want to spend the evening feeling uncomfortable. There are loads of venues to choose from in the DC, MD and VA area so take some time and find the right place for your perfect party.

Don’t blow the budget.

Decide in advance how much you want to spend on the party and stick to it where possible. If you over-spend you might spend the time worrying how you are going to pay for it all while everyone else is having fun.

Save the date.

It’s almost impossible to pick a date that will suit everyone, but try and avoid arranging your party on a date that may clash with a big sporting event, another friend’s celebration or a holiday when many people go out-of-town.  There is nothing worse than carefully organizing the details of your soiree only to find everyone is already busy.

You can get around this by sending out save the date cards, which will advise people of your plans in advance. Make sure you don’t leave any key people off the guest list and when it is time to send out invites proofread them first!

That’s entertainment.

If you’re hiring a DJ or band it’s a good idea to get some recommendations first. A great reputation is a good indication that the entertainment will help your party go well. If you have the opportunity to check out the band or DJ in action before hiring them, then definitely do so.

Eat, drink and be merry.

Making sure you have the right type of (and enough) food and drink can be a worry. Professional caterers will know how much food per person you should have, so rely on their experience to guide you. A theme is fine but remember to consider guests with allergies or special dietary requirements. If you are offering vegetarian, vegan, gluten free etc. to accommodate guests, make sure food is clearly labeled. No-one wants to be confronted by a guest waving an epi-pen due to them helping themselves to peanut chicken satay by mistake. Drink-wise, alcoholic beverages will help the party go with a swing, but offer non-alcoholic drinks too and make sure there’s water on hand for drinkers and non-drinkers alike.
