Planning a 16th Birthday Party

Reaching the grand young age of sixteen is a magical milestone in terms of growing up. There is no better way to celebrate this significant landmark than with a Sweet 16 Birthday Party. What makes a party successful? Grab your party poppers and come with us on a whistle-stop tour:

Wow the crowd.

First off - send out striking invites, this sets the tone for what’s to come (if you are having a theme start it here). Prepare for some extensive outfit shopping before-hand (this may be a good time to pick up some hints for an amazing gift too)! Your teen will want to look their best and making an entrance is all part of the fun. They may want to go solo, so all eyes are on them (think spotlights etc.) or maybe they feel more comfortable arriving with their closest pals. Hiring a sophisticated limo or super-cool hummer could help facilitate the grandest of entrances.

Know where it’s at.

Your nearly-16-year-old will dictate that party central needs to be completely awesome. Yes, awesomeness must be in your list, but keep in mind the practicalities too! Consider the number of guests to help define the size space you need (large ballroom or VIP room in a restaurant)? Location is important, is the venue easy to get to and is there parking available? Budget also counts!

Style it out

A theme can really add the wow factor to a Sweet 16. A circus theme can be fun, or how about a neon party complete with black lights? If glitz and glamour is their thing, then a red-carpet party could be the perfect showbiz solution.  You can decorate the room in line with the theme and use it as an inspiration for the cake, catering and entertainment. E.g. think stilt-walkers for a circus and a break-dancer to fire up a neon theme.

Eat, drink and be merry.

Your venue will likely be able to assist with catering options. If they allow outside catering there are a number of companies that can provide their services.  There’s plenty to choose from – fun buffets work well (think finger food like mini-sliders that they can grab and go)! Cake-wise your baby is only 16 once and a show-stopper is a MUST! Custom cakes can be personalized to incorporate your theme and teen’s name (a nice touch).

Check out our friends at 5-12 Dessert Boutique and Lounge for a special dessert.  Just like us, they’re a mother-daughter duo as well!

Picture Perfect.

A photographer can capture special moments and make the party-goers feel special (this also fits in well if you are heading down the red-carpet theme)! You can discuss the style of pics you prefer, be it contemporary or artistic etc. Photo booths can also be great fun – grabbing a funny prop and getting a group together can be a terrific party starter.  Capture the Joy is our photo station package providing a custom backdrop and free-standing camera allowing guests to keep the party going all night long!  Mention Capture the Joy and this blog post and receive 10% off your package!

Let me Entertain You.

In a teens list of life priorities, music must surely be near the top.  Unless you are 100% sure you share your teen’s taste in hits better let them lead the way here. A good DJ will be up on what’s hot and providing them with a playlist featuring the birthday girl or boy’s favorites (and those of their friends) may help to ensure the party goes off fabulously. A band is another option, it may cost more and ideally you need to see them in action or get a recommendation - but live entertainment does add a great buzz to the room.
