How about this for a bizarre concept? Wedding guests arrive at the wedding venue and witness the whole amazing day through their own eyes, not through the lens of their cameras or mobile phones. No click-click-clicking or standing up and leaning over Great Auntie’s colossal hat trying to get the perfect shot. Just total, uninterrupted enjoyment of the wedding, live and happening right there in front of their eyes.
In a world where viewing events from behind a screen has become the norm, we seem to have lost the art of being in the moment. This has been replaced by the need to capture it all and showcase it to everyone and anyone who has a minute to check in. Photos from the ceremony, shots of the bride, the groom, the bridesmaids, the cake, the DJ… the list goes on. Forget watching the speeches, lets video them all and enjoy them at a later date (that might never come). Guests are so busy uploading it all onto social media and seeking “likes” that by the time they look up the married couple have hopped in the car and are heading off on their honeymoon.
It might seem an alien concept to request guests DO NOT use their tech on your big day, some guests may faint at the thought of not having their finger on their button for a few hours. Surely the world will stop rotating? You can reassure them they will survive, and in the meantime they can sit back and enjoy a lovely day. Hey, they might even enjoy it, there’s a lot to be said for living in the present. Of course, to do this you will need to put your faith (and so will your guests) in a first-class wedding photographer. They need to be professional, with credentials and a reputation to match. After all he or she will be responsible for producing the images that you will want to treasure forever – no pressure, but if no-one else is getting snap happy, they need to deliver.
Take some time to consider what it is you want from your wedding photographs and look at your photographer’s portfolio. After all, you want to end up with an amazing wedding album you can share with your nearest and dearest.
Don’t book someone based on the amazing images you’ve seen from a beach wedding in glorious sunshine if your wedding is taking place in a gothic mansion, early evening in the middle of winter. Compare like for like to make sure you will adore what you’re getting. Getting great shots of the wedding party and your guests will be top of the list but don’t neglect the details! If you’ve spent months deftly choosing the shade of ribbons adorning the pew decorations, ask the photographer to get a few shots including them. It will be nice to look back and remember all those details you agonized over as well as pictures of smiling guests. Communication is the key, if you want some funny or artistic shots capturing key moments be sure to discuss this with your photographer. It’s best to all be singing from the same hymn book (especially where weddings are concerned)!
If you want to add another element to your day in terms of photography, you can also hire a photo booth for your reception. These add a fun element to your event with guests able to get individual and group shots taken instantaneously – add props if you want to crank up the silliness factor, after a few glasses of bubbly the results can be hilarious!
Or how about going a bit more “old-school” and hiring a caricature artist? They can capture images of your guests that will delight, surprise and add a really personal touch to your wedding.
